Understanding the necessity of certain volumes for different race distances is obligatory, if you wanted to keep your health and ongoing performance gains. The body has to be trained, if a desired distance wanted to be completed with no negative implications.
You might say, that you have been running marathons for a decade on a max 60km weekly mileage. Most probably your diet is perfect, you are young, doing cross training and strength and conditioning and have a spotless running form.
Even like this, there will be no surprises when at age of 40 / 50 / 60 your knees, hips and ankles will be giving you trouble ! I assure you, that is going to be happening.
In the last 1.5 decade I personally have seen so many runners ending up in the dumpster. As running goes ! Or trying to hang on while constantly battling with pain, injuries, health issues.
I can hear already the excuses. My body is not made for running ! I had this one thing going on and become chronic ! I have no time for this ! Ah it wasn't my fault, I had bad fall during trail running !
You train properly for your desired race or you don't do the race at all ! Health first !
