Colon means large intestine and Scopy means view inside. It is always better to know why a doctor is asking for a colonoscopy. Generally, it serves 3 purposes, diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring.

Indications for Diagnostic are – Bleeding from the rectum, unexplained weight loss, extreme constipation, unexplained diarrhea, a suspected cancerous growth or polyps in the colon or rectum, and IBD like Crohns Diseases or Ulcerative Colitis.

Indications for Therapeutic are – Removing polyps or polypectomy, decompressing the large intestine, clearing any obstruction due to any cancerous growths and place a stent, and foreign body removal from the colon.

Monitoring – Rechecking for the reoccurrence of polyps after polypectomy, monitoring the polyps present in young people where they have not been removed, monitoring an anastomotic colon, monitoring any cancer reoccurrence after cancer cell removal surgery, etc.
