Understanding the sources of outdoor air pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa: lessons from Ghana

Understanding the sources of outdoor air pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa: lessons from Ghana The webinar on understanding the sources of outdoor air pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa was held on August 21, 2019. Panelists included Mr. Emmanuel Appoh (Ghana Environmental Protection Agency), Dr. Michael Hannigan (University of Colorado Boulder), and Dr. Eloise Marais (University of Leicester).

Description:
Countries in sub-Saharan Africa experience high levels of outdoor and indoor air pollution, and yet there are limited data on the contributions of various sources at national and sub-national levels. What has not yet been fully appreciated by policymakers in the region is that the widespread (nearly 80%) reliance of households on solid fuels (for example, wood, charcoal) or other polluting fuels (for example, kerosene) is a major source of outdoor air pollution with health consequences for broader populations.

This webinar highlighted strategies to quantify source contributions to outdoor air-pollution-related impacts on population health. Panelists discussed specific methods and techniques used for characterization of air pollution sources, and presented information on the latest data on emissions sources in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa. The webinar also covered key skills and resources necessary to identify key air pollution sources.
