How to clean and polish your bike's rear derailleur

How to clean and polish your bike's rear derailleur STEP 1: REMOVE THE REAR WHEEL AND UNDO THE DERAILLEUR CABLE
Remove the wheel, loosen the cable crimper bolt, cut off the cable end cap and unthread the cable.

STEP 2: REMOVE THE CHAIN AND DETACH THE DERAILLEUR
Unscrew the upper pulley bolt to detach the chain, as well as the derailleur hanger bolt, to detach the derailleur.

STEP 3: DISASSEMBLE THE DERAILLEUR
Keep all derailleur components neatly organised, so you don’t risk losing anything and you can keep track of what goes where.

STEP 4: CLEAN AND DEGREASE THE DERAILLEUR PARTS
Let the loose parts soak in a small container with degreaser for 5 to 10 minutes, and then clean with a brush and wipe dry.

STEP 5: REMOVE RUST
Use your Dremel Multi-Tool with Brass Brushes (535 and 537) to efficiently remove rust from the derailleur.

STEP 6: POLISH THE PARTS
Use polishing accessories (414 and 422), impregnated with Polishing Compound (421), to make the parts shine again.

STEP 7: REASSEMBLE THE DERAILLEUR
Using an Allen key, Phillips screwdriver and combination spanner, put the derailleur back together. Work in reverse order to how you disassembled it.

STEP 8: INSTALL THE DERAILLEUR
Slide the derailleur back onto its hanger, align it and tighten the bolts with a combination spanner.

STEP 9: THREAD THE CHAIN BACK ON TO THE REAR DERAILLEUR
Guide the bike chain over and around the cassette, and then thread it through the pulleys before slotting the wheel back in.

STEP 10: ADJUST THE DERAILLEUR
With the chain on the smallest sprocket, adjust the derailleur while spinning the pedal. Repeat this process on the biggest sprocket.
