A Turkish invasion of north-eastern Syria would provide 'direct support to ISIS' according to Spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mustafa Bali, who spoke in al-Hasakah on Monday.

Bali warned that "especially in the recently-liberated areas" IS (formerly ISIS/ISIL) would "seize the opportunity of such an invasion, and it may return to impose their control."

He added that the US withdrawal from north-eastern Syria effectively 'unleashes' the Turks there.

He also stressed that the US move to leave the "border territory with Turkey" was "surprising."

Bali stated that the SDF considers "such a Turkish invasion as a force of occupation and a force of ethnic genocide against the components in northeast or Syria, including the Kurds."

The withdrawal of US forces comes ahead of a planned Turkish military operation to create a 'safe zone' in northern Syria. According to the White House statement Turkey, will 'soon' begin the operation.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed the White House statement at a news conference on Monday, stating that the official withdrawal of US troops had begun.

According to local media, Turkish warplanes bombed the Semelka border crossing between Iraq and northeast Syria late on Monday, with SANA reporting that the strikes hit Syria while the SDF have stated that it was the Iraqi side that was struck.
