Only in Japan: The Bizarre and The Amazing

Japan had gained popularity due to various reasons, one of the biggest contributing factors to its skyrocketing popularity is anime. When you say Japan, most people would immediately have anime come into their minds. As it turns out there are still a lot of bizarre and amazing things in Japan that are not widely known.

If you think Green Tea KitKat is weird then how about Wasabi KitKat? In Japan, they have a lot of bizarre or amazing, depending on your taste, flavors of KitKat. To mention a few they have bananas, soy sauce, sweet potato, pumpkin pudding, strawberry cheesecake, sakura, sweet corn, grapes, red pepper, citrus, and sweet bean jelly flavors. This is a far cry from the cookies and cream, white chocolate, chocolate, and dark chocolate that we are all used to.

One fact about Japan that might have been hinted on animes is that there are tons of vending machines all over the country. It is estimated that there is 1 vending machine for every 40 people in Japan. These vending machines would offer a wide variety of products from rice, sake, umbrellas, corn soup, batteries, electricity in charging stations, beer, cups, yes just cups, vegetables, hot meals, lucky charms and fortunes, toilet paper, t-shirts, ice cream, health items, flowers, ties, toys, masks, snacks, bananas, eggs, instant cup ramen, and costumes. So be sure to have a coin in hand when you are in Japan.

Traveling on a budget can be easier in Japan. If you need a cheap but good place to spend the night in; Japan offers a unique way for travelers to sleep, Capsule hotels. These Capsule hotels have compact rooms that would fit only a single person. Every capsule gives off a futuristic vibe and are equipped with electronics that would allow you to enjoy music, television, high speed internet access and more. Aside from the stay in the Capsule, you also have access to bathrooms that are shared by those who are staying in the hotel. Prices usually range from $30 to $50.

Speaking of sleep, there are legitimate services in Japan that offers cuddling services. For a certain price you can go to bed and sleep with someone, in a non-sexual way. You can ask for extra services like a pat on the head, a hug, a kiss on the cheek but those are usually additional options. Their main service is to offer someone to sleep beside a paying customer. It is legitimate as sexual acts are prohibited.

Japanese people are very serious about their jobs and their careers. It is not unusual for a Japanese couple to be very rich and successful but have no children. Sometimes the only option for a couple to have someone inherit their company and follow their footsteps would be to adopt; not adopt a child whom they would raise to become like them but adopt a full grown adult whom they think have the greatest potential. Adopting a fully grown man is pretty common in Japan. In 2008 alone almost 90,000 men in their 20s and 30s were adopted.

If you have the habit of dozing off at work then you should migrate to Japan. In Japan, taking a nap is not a sign of laziness. Bosses and officemates would view those who would take a nap as hardworking. To them, napping means that you have been working so hard that you had to lay your head and close your eyes for a bit.

Bet you didn’t know about these interesting things about Japan. Hopefully you are now more intrigued to learn more about the country.
