Tanning. Most people associate tanning with beauty. Why? Because it makes their bodies glow.

But that's not all tanning does. Tanning also comes with health benefits which range from improved appearance to enhanced and elevated mood, and increased vitamin D levels. The Indoor Tanning Associated that tanning potentially lengthens one's life.

That sounds like some great news! But you know what they say, all things with advantages will always come with disadvantages. And here is the big risk of tanning:

Someone who tans has the potential to get skin cancer. That is horrible news no doubt. The Skin Cancer Foundation stated that "skin cancer is often caused by damage to the DNA of skin cells, which is the result of ultraviolet radiation from either the sun or tanning beds."

In case you're not sure how, this means when you are tanning, your skin won't be able to do its job. The skin is the largest organ on a human body, and it is responsible for protecting us from injuries, infections, heat and even sunlight.

Getting some sun is good, but when it is concentrated on the human body, the skin cells become abnormal and may grow uncontrollably.

Out of all the forms of cancer, melanoma is the most dangerous one, because it is almost unidentifiable. It is one you might call, "hiding in plain sight."

Melanoma presents itself in very casual ways. Sometimes it's a change of color – which you might confuse for effects of tanning – or it's a mole on our skin.

Naturally, the human skin is predisposed to growing moles. Some of which are not harmful and some are melanomas disguised as moles.

And that was what Bethany Gambardella-Greenway, a 39 years old woman from Austin, Texas thought about the dark spot on her skin when she was pregnant.

She never saw the melanoma coming. She was convinced that the dark spot was caused by her tans, as she was a regular tanner, and she also thought the spot was a result of hormonal changes.

She had two good excuses for not going to get the spot checked out.

Eventually, however, she did go to see a dermatologist and the dermatologist told her it was just a liver spot.

"Nothing there," he said.

But 18 months after that visit, the mole, which took residence on Bethany's forehead, became painful.

Because of the excruciating pain, Bethany made the decision that would come to save her life, as she decided to go see another dermatologist.

It was thanks to this new dermatologist that it was found out that that spot on Bethany's forehead wasn't a liver spot – oh, no, no!

It was a desmoplastic melanoma!

Yes, it is just as bad as it sounds. This is a form of melanoma that is not only invasive but aggressive as well.

The dermatologist knew what had to be done, and quickly he arranged a surgery, through which the mole was removed. But…

…the cancer had already spread to her bones and lymph nodes.

And so began the journey of Bethany on the immunotherapy treatment road.

She survived, thankfully, but not without a whole lot of pain. In the weeks after she began the treatment, Bethany's skin was covered in sores, her voice became hoarse and she couldn't taste her food.

Three weeks into the treatment, she lost all the hair in the area of the treatment, and also painfully lost 40 pounds.

There is no greater news than knowing Bethany survived.

After become free from cancer, Bethany made it her lifelong objective to share her experience with people, telling them of how tanning without sunscreen is harmful, and even tagged tanning "…just damaged skin."

But if you're still really interested in tanning, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that you use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. And if you're outside every day, do use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more.

Remember, a mole might not just be a mole. Always be on the lookout and visit a doctor if there is a change in an existing mole or if a new mole appears.
