Banks do not NEED to have EXPENSIVE buildings and physical locations. But the banks that still do this need to pay their employees somehow and so they do that by charging you fees.
But there are so many online options that DON’T staff thousands of people to just sit around or have ENORMOUS buildings that are always empty. So by savings on these costs they can provide FREE checking, with NO FEES and some of these banks will literally even PAY YOU to bank with them.
The first checking account I wanted to talk about is SoFi money. This is an online only bank BUT it is WAY more accessible than even banks with physical locations.
There are no fees with this bank, no fee to open an account, no overdraft fees, no maintenance fees AND no ATM fees. You will have access to virtually any ATM and they'll just reimburse for those fees. If you have been with Bank of America or Wells Fargo just that right there will blow your mind.
The REASON this bank actually made the list of the TOP checking accounts was because the money you have in this account will earn 1.6% interest. If you have been with big banks your entire life that doesn’t even sound real.
Now the next “checking account” is actually called a “cash management account” you still get a debit card, you can still pull out cash but this account is through RobinHood.
They have a debit card is issued by Sutton Bank, FDIC Insurance AND give you 1.8% APY which is .2% higher than SOFI.
Now there are a few of issues with Robinhood which would prevent me from recommending it but I had to mention it because I know many people watching this video are familiar with Robinhood. Just know when you hear about this account it is far inferior compared to others.
I wouldn’t put too much faith into Robinhood, but that’s just me.
So the next bank, the best bank, my personal choice, is Redneck bank.
I mean you've got 2.75% interest on your money as A CHECKING ACCOUNT.
But it gets better, because they refund ATM fees, they don’t have minimum balance fees or service charges. Compared to SOFI the interest rate is just too high to ignore. And unlike Robinhood this this is pretty well established.
If I had to choose one of these three it would definitely be either redneck bank or sofi. Between the higher interest rates and reliability of the companies it just makes sense.
BUT these few top companies by no means make an exhaustive list and there are many other “decent” checking accounts. And if you are interested in high yield SAVINGS accounts it’s a completely different line up.
I do want to also mention it doesn't make sense to use these accounts if you have a considerable amount of financing with a credit union or local bank which will allow you really low interest rate loans on things like vehicles or mortgages.
In the end all of this stuff changes so quickly anyways, it’s like every month there is a new bank offering even higher interest rate checking accounts. So do some of your own research but if you want the best accounts start with these three.
