It can be positive such as a business growth, it can be painful like losing your job, it can be out of your control like a natural disaster, or it could be a choice like moving house or getting married. Your reaction to that change might vary from excitement to fear, resentment or a confusing mixture of emotions. In all cases, your attitude to change will likely determine how you experience it.
So what can you do to ensure that you have a positive experience of something changing?
1- Think things through and ask what is the worst that can happen- We fear change because we are afraid of the unknown. So think through things carefully and try to imagine all the different possible outcomes and then decide on what would be your best and worst case scenarios. Everything is scary until you try it.
2- Ask yourself what can you change, influence or accept -Remember my problem solving piece were I discussed C.I.A? If not please listen/read for further explanation. In short what can you change, if can’t change anything what can you influence. If you can change or influence anything what do you just need to accept and move on.
3- Celebrate the positives -Be grateful for everything in your life that is working the way you want it to right now. Or that just makes your life comfortable.
4- Take action- If the unwanted change is within your control take an active approach to dealing with it. Try some problem solving techniques, or set some goals to proactively address any changes.
5- Manage stress- Improving your ability to manage stress will go a long way to helping you with change. Try practising mindfulness or meditation techniques.
6- Seek support- It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed if the change you are facing is really big, or there is too much change happening all at once. If you need it seek support.
