Philip was expected to reunite with the Queen at Sandringham ahead of Christmas after Her Majesty travelled to King's Lynn after her last engagement delivering the Queen's Speech on Thursday but was instead taken to London because of a "pre-existing" condition. While the Palace has yet to confirm when and if the Duke will be returning to Norfolk, ITV News royal editor Chris Ship said sources appeared to jokingly suggest Philip would prefer to spend some time "alone" in hospital then face the excitement of bringing a large group of Royal Family members together for the holidays.  Speaking to 7 News, Mr Ship said: "Some people have suggested to me the Duke of Edinburgh would quite like Christmas on his own in hospital rather than with the family. "However, I think if they can get him back to Sandringham for the Christmas period, then I think they would do that." In a statement issued on Friday, Buckingham Palace said: "The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. "The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor.”  The Duke was originally believed to have been driven from Norfolk to the London hospital but later reports revealed Prince Philip was flown out of Sandringham into the capital. Royal sources told the Daily Mail Philip "had a bad fall" recently which had left him bed-bound. The Duke has been described in the past as "tough as an ox" but was previously admitted to hospital on two occasions over the past couple of years, once in 2012 with a bladder infection and again in 2018 to undergo hip surgery. The sources also suggested Philip has been battling a flu-like condition over the past few days and described him as "increasingly frail".   One source told the Mail: "The Duke has had a bad turn recently and has been looking much frailer of late. "He's a remarkable man who has always prided himself on how robust he is, but he is six months off his 99th birthday and age takes its toll. He hasn't been looking terribly well of late." The Duke of Edinburgh retired from official duties at the age of 2017 and has since appeared a few times in public on family events such as Princess Eugenie's wedding in October 2018 and Lady Gabriella Windsor's nuptials earlier this year. Since his retirement, Prince Philip has spent most of his time in one of his favourite royal residences – Wood Farm on the Sandringham
