Last year when I went to the Philippines, I learned the lesson of pursuing happiness—to not go through life on autopilot and to make a conscious effort to live. When I went this year, I received an entirely different lesson. I was humbled, and I learned to not take anything for granted. Not a single second. I found out that a cousin that I grew up with was very sick and was spending every second fighting for his life. When he saw me, he didn't recognize me. He had no idea who I was, and that was really heartbreaking. Then, the news about Kobe and his daughter GiGi broke this morning. Within 6 minutes of TMZ breaking the story, I called my dad. We were silent on the phone for a while. Kobe was a legend. My dad is a life-long Lakers fan (he grew up in Carson lol) and I grew up watching Kobe succeed time and time again. He was like our own Black Superman. I think about the impact Kobe made in communities not only around LA, but around the world. This also made me realize how precious life is...how anything can be gone in a second. GiGi was only 13 years old and had so many goals, dreams, aspirations. Just like my cousin Dustin, who recently passed and whom I talk about in this video. He was only 23 years old, and he had lots of dreams he was not able to fulfill.
I'm not entirely sure why this is the lesson I'm receiving this year, but I wanted to share my thoughts in hopes it helps someone process whatever they're feeling. Because at the end of the day, a lot of the things we think matter a lot, actually don't mean a thing at all. Yet we ignore, forget, and take for granted the smallest of things.
Every time you leave your house and make it back safely, be grateful.
Every time you go to sleep with a roof over your head, be grateful.
Every morning you wake up in good health, be grateful.
Every moment you spend with someone you love, savor it. And be grateful for them, their love, and the time you have together.
As ubiquitous as this phrase is, we really have to live life to the fullest. Anything can end in an instant. Never take a single second for granted.
REST IN POWER

and to all those involved in the devastating crash this morning.
