In this English vocabulary lesson you learn the names of different places in a city. You will see the name of the place next to some pictures of it.
Below that name is a brief description of what happens or can be done at that place in the city.
There are many places, buildings and stores that you will find in a city or town. The names of the 42 typical places in a city that appear in this lesson are:
airport, amusement park, bakery, bank, bookstore, bus station, butcher's,
cafe / café, cinema / movie theater, court, craft market, dentist / dentist’s,
department store, dry cleaner’s, fast food restaurant, fire station, florist’s (shop), (art) gallery, gas station / petrol station, greengrocer’s, gym, hairdresser’s / hair salon, hardware store, hospital, hotel, library, museum, park, parking lot / car park, pet shop / pet store, pharmacy / drugstore, playground, police station, post office, prison, restaurant, school, shopping mall, stadium, subway station / underground station, supermarket, and zoo.
You will notice that we have also included some regional differences in the names of certain places in British English and American English. For example: Subway vs Underground
