These cars now have a listed 390 and 351-mile range, up from the previous 373 and 328 miles.
The range of the Tesla Model S has an interesting story. When it was unveiled in 2012 the Model S had only 265 miles. In about 2015 Tesla increased the Model S range crossing the 300-mile barrier. You can now see how much the range has improved since 2012. Thus, Tesla has improved the Model S range by nearly 125 miles since debuting the vehicle in 2012.
Here are 3 ways that helped Tesla to increase the Model S and X range. The company does it mainly through engineering progress, hardware improvements, and over-the-air software updates. In fact, the company says that for the S and X cars that were delivered "in recent months," Tesla will soon unlock the range with a free software update. According to Elon’s recent tweet “many small hardware improvements throughout the car that have been introduced gradually over the past several months." Interestingly, software updates not only have increased Tesla Model S and X range but also improved performance factors like acceleration and driving range.
Note that only certain models received this range update. Tesla’s performance models did not receive a range update. The Performance Model S still has 348 miles of range and the Model X has 305 miles.
