Reading is a Process that needs to be taught

Many people think that reading can happen naturally like walking, talking or eating where you can just watch and copy. It is not so. Reading is a skill that must be taught in a step-by-step process. Learning to read is like cracking a code. The child is taught the 26 sounds of the alphabet that also combine to form the 44 phonemes.
