Born into a family of the Ezhava caste in an era when people from such communities were regarded as Avarna (untouchable). He led a reform movement in Kerala, against the injustice in the caste-ridden society of Kerala in order to promote spiritual enlightenment and social equality. Narayana Guru was a rishi as well as a sutrakara (the author of a sutra text) of the Age of Science.
About Darshana Mala (Garland of Visions):
The DARSHANA MALA is the most beloved work of Sree Narayana Guru Devan. Of his Sanskrit works, the Darshana Mala stands out as prominent. This work of one hundred verses considers the ultimate, non-dual Reality from ten different philosophical angles, where each angle is revealed in a chapter comprised of ten verses. Each such vision (darshana) is unique, while the non-dual vision running through each remains the same. As such, all visions can be visualized as forming a single mala (garland) united by a common string. Swami Vidyananda was a direct disciple of Narayana Guru and it was he who took down the Guru`s dictation which would come to form the original poem.
This video series is based on the English translation of 'Darshana Mala' rendered by Don Berry.
