CAN and COULD are used to:
1) Use CAN to show Skill or Ability (ជំនាញ ឬ សមត្ថភាព)
2) Use COULD for possibility, but not certain(អ្វីដែលអាចកើតឡើង តែមិនប្រាកដ)
3) For polite expression (ឃ្លាគួរសម)
a) Making suggestion – COULD. (កាផ្តល់ជាយោបល់/សំណើរ)
b) Making requests – CAN or COULD (ស្នើរសុំ សុំគេជួយ)
c) Making offer –CAN or COULD (សុំគេជួយ សុំជួយគេ)
d) Ask permission -- –CAN or COULD (សុំការអនុញ្ញាតិ)
e) Give permission –CAN (ផ្តល់ការអនុញ្ញាតិ)
Below are examples
1) Use CAN to show Skill or Ability (ជំនាញ ឬ សមត្ថភាព)
—She can speak English.
— I can drive on difficult roads.
— I can swim in the river.
— I can play guitar.
Could –. (អតីកាលរបស់ CAN)
— I could speak 3 languages when I lived in Siem Reap.
— I could play the piano at the age of 10.
— She could danced well when she was 9 years old.
2) Use COULD for possibility, but not certain (អ្វីដែលអាចកើតឡើង តែមិនប្រាកដ)
—They could come by plane.
—The bus could be late.
— If you don’t study hard, you could fail the exam.
— Sothea could have worked in an office if he had gone to university.
CAN - (សំរាប់អ្វីដែលអាចកើតឡើងជាទូរទៅ)
— It can be very hot in October.
— You can catch a cold if you go out in the rain.
— You can be dangerous if you drive fast.
3) For polite expression (ឃ្លាគួរសម)
a) Making suggestion – COULD. (កាផ្តល់ជាយោបល់/សំណើរ)
—You could ask your sister to lend you some money.
—We could meet on Friday morning.
—You could eat dinner together tonight.
b)Making requests – CAN or COULD (ស្នើរសុំ សុំគេជួយ)
[COULD ]- more formal and polite ផ្លូវការ និងគួរសមជាង
—Can/ Could you pass me the salt (please)?
—Can/ Could you show me (please)?
—Can/ Could I speak to Chantha (please)?
c) Making offer –CAN or COULD (សុំគេជួយ សុំជួយគេ)
—Can/Could I carry your bag?
—Can/Could I get you something to drink (sir)?
—Can/Could I help you with your suitcase (madam)?
d) Ask permission -- –CAN or COULD (សុំការអនុញ្ញាតិ)
—Can/Could I go home now?
—Can/Could I borrow your pen (please)?
—Can/Could I take a day off tomorrow?
e) Give permission –CAN (ផ្តល់ការអនុញ្ញាតិ)
—You can go home now.
—You can borrow my pen if you need.
—You can take day off on Friday.
