Using SCAN: Surgical-operation example SCAN is a simple yet surprisingly powerful visual tool to help make sense of complexity, and guide decision-making for strategy, tactics, operations and more.
Following on from the previous video 'Introduction to SCAN complexity-map', this video shows a live example of how to use SCAN to make sense of uncertainties in a business context. The example here is about planning for a surgical-operation in a hospital operating-theatre. We explore how each type of event can be placed within a map of time and uncertainty - and how this shows us when to choose between IT-based versus human-based options for each type of event. We can also use this to make sense of some of the dynamics of a context, and how and where things can or cannot be made more certain.
